Regional Facts

The main campus of 91Pron¹ú²ú is located in the heart of the , a fascinating part of America’s history in the development of Northern Illinois.

Lockport (immediately adjacent to 91Pron¹ú²ú) was established as a community on the slopes of the Des Plaines river valley in 1836. Active development occurred with the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which was designed to provide a crucial water link from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River.

Within a few years of the canal opening in 1848, the railroad followed the path established by the I&M Canal, and Lockport was passed by as Chicago became the main rail terminus. Without the canal, however, it is unlikely that Chicago would have become the major city it has.
